Teaching with Coins: Coins as Tools for Thinking about the Ancient World

Panel Organized by the Friends of Numismatics (SCS Affiliated Group) AIA/SCS Annual Meeting January 2-5, 2020, Washington, DC

Coins can give students a special window on the ancient world, an abundant and independent testimony that illuminates archaeology, politics, history, iconography, gender, mythology and art.

Coins have great potential as a medium by which students can access and learn about a range of subjects concerning the ancient world. Coins are numerous and widely available, are not particularly fragile and can be handled by students. They are serial and provide unique sets of data. Numerous numismatic tools today are available online (Nomisma, CRRO, OCRE, RPC). This panel is intended as an interdisciplinary discussion on the importance of coins as primary source for our knowledge of the ancient world.

The Friends of Numismatics invite proposals for papers (15-20 minutes each) on the use of coins and numismatics from university professor, secondary school teachers, museum scholars, and archaeologists that address both the challenges and benefits of teaching with numismatic objects.
