Awards and Fellowships

The Committee on the Awards for Excellence in the Teaching of Classics at the College Level invites nominations for the 2023 SCS Award for Excellence in Teaching. In order to give special and public expression to the Society’s commitment to honor and foster excellence in the teaching of Classics we welcome nominations of faculty teaching Classics in all sorts of departments, whether public or private, in large institutions or small.

The National Humanities Center invites applications for academic-year or one-semester residential fellowships. Mid-career, senior, and emerging scholars from all areas of the humanities with a strong record of peer-reviewed work are encouraged to apply.

On behalf of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS), the Erich S. Gruen Prize Committee invites all graduate students in North America to enter the fourth annual competition for the best graduate research paper on multiculturalism in the ancient Mediterranean. This year the prize will be a cash award of $1,000.

In 2023, SCS disbursed $15,000 in Contingent Faculty Grants. This is the second year of the program, which is funded from the Society's Research and Teaching Endowment. The selection committee made seven awards on two tracks: (1) professional development and (2) financial aid.

The awardees this year are Justin Michael Colvin, Lissa Crofton-Sleigh, Alice Gaber, Valeria Tezzon, Daniel Schindler, and two anonymous awardees.

The LCC and WCC hosted a reading of this year’s prize-winning papers on June 14, 2023 via Zoom. Each year, the WCC and LCC recognize published and unpublished work by graduate students and faculty with juried awards that are announced during the opening night party at the SCS annual meeting. The reading group revisits the winning published work in the summer, so that attendees can share reactions, insights for classroom use, and potential applications for research.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to announce that 2023-24 ACLS fellowship and grant competitions are now open for select programs. ACLS offers programs that promote research across the full spectrum of humanities and interpretive social science fields.

Our application, peer review, and award processes aim to advance inclusive excellence, and we welcome applicants from groups that are underrepresented in the academic humanities and from across the diverse landscape of higher education.

The Getty Research Institute is pleased to announce the theme for residential grants and fellowships for pre-docs, post-docs, and scholars at the Getty Center and Villa for the 2024/25 academic year. Applications will open on July 1, 2023.

The next deadline for Applications to the Ancient Worlds, Modern Communities (AnWoMoCo) initiative is May 19, 2023. AnWoMoCo provides mini-grants of up to $2,000 per project for public engagement projects. You can more about the initiative on the AnWoMoCo web page and apply online using this form.
