Material Culture in the History Classroom: Techniques and Methods

Sponsored by the APA Committee on Ancient History

Serena Connolly, Organizer

Programs on the History and Discovery Channels and most recently Google Earth’s Ancient Rome layer are helping to popularize the disciplines of history and archaeology and draw students to study of the ancient world. Never has material culture been more popular. This panel aims to explore the ways in which studies of material culture can be integrated into courses on ancient history and also to bring technological and methodological advances in archaeology to the attention of teachers of ancient history. Panelists’ discussions will draw examples from funerary practices, cartography, architecture and ceramics.
