JCCAE: A subcommittee consisting of Jessica Blum, Daniel Leon and Ivy Livingston revised the SCS Award for Excellence in Teaching at the K-12 Level in light of suggestions by the Equity Advisor, Victoria Pagan. One notable change is to move from a model of nomination, to application, in order to remove any stigma attaching to “self-nomination” and to broaden the candidate pool.

K-12: After an editorial meeting for Classical Outlook, a few members of the K-12 Committee are working with Ken Kitchell create an informal bibliography for classics pedagogy. Conversations are ongoing with the AP American office to build for potential transfer to AP in the future, if desired.

Teaching Excellence Awards Committee: This committee is finishing a similar revision of the SCS Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Collegiate Level along similar lines.

Graduate Committee

a) 2022 Meeting in San Francisco (held as fully virtual meeting)

One event (approved)

Panel: “Rebuilding, Reconnecting, Restructuring: The Future(s) of Classical Studies Post-COVID.”

In the spirit of rebuilding, reconnecting, and restructuring our relationships inside and outside our departments, the SCS Graduate Student Committee is hosting a workshop that seeks to envision possible futures for the field of Classical Studies. The twin purposes of our panel are: to 1) continue addressing many of the current critiques regarding accessibility, equity, and equality of opportunity in the field, and to 2) model a version of Classics that is not insular and reclusive, but builds academic and personal alliances with other fields, humanities-related and otherwise.

Panelists: Nicholas Cross, PhD, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, Samantha Masters, PhD, Stellenbosch University, Hallie Franks, PhD, NYU, Gallatin School of Individualized Study, Elizabeth Heintges, Columbia University.

(b) The inaugural SCS/AIA Dissertation Lecture took place on April 22, 2021, in large part organized by AIA Student Affairs Interest Group and the Graduate Student Committee. The premiere talk was "Forgetting Sextus Pompey: the bellum Siculum and Vergil’s Aeneid" by Elizabeth Heintges, PhD Candidate at Columbia University.
