The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne invites applications for the Elizabeth and James Tatoulis Chair in Classics, at the rank of full Professor (Level E). This continuing appointment will be situated in the Discipline of Classics and Archaeology, one of Australia's leading programs for the study of the ancient world, a position it has maintained since the establishment of the University of Melbourne in 1854. The program provides students with a multi-disciplinary perspective on ancient Graeco-Roman, Aegean and Near Eastern cultures, from the earliest civilisations down to Late Antiquity. Teaching and research is conducted in the classical languages (Greek and Latin – the program currently also teaches Egyptian, Akkadian, and Syriac Aramaic on a sessional basis); Greek and Roman literature; Greek and Roman history; and the archaeology of the ancient Aegean, Mediterranean, Near East and Levant. Archaeological field projects are an integral part of the program with active collaborative expeditions to Georgia (the Caucasus), Turkey, Israel, Greece and Italy.

The Chair in Classics was one of the four founding chairs of the University of Melbourne and has been in existence since 1854. The appointment of a new Chair has been made possible through the generous support of benefactors, especially Elizabeth and James Tatoulis, after whom the Chair is named. The professor holding the Elizabeth and James Tatoulis Chair in Classics will be expected to make major contributions in the areas of research, academic leadership, administration and professional development, and demonstrate excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the supervision of graduate students. The appointee will have an established research specialisation in an aspect of Classics and potential to achieve a high level of research performance through refereed publications and the securing of research grants. A principal duty of the successful appointee will be to foster and enhance interdisciplinary activities as well as the program's extensive and successful suite of engagement activities.
