We seek a current graduate student with research experience in Latin language and ancient psychology to work on a multi-institutional project to develop methods for the study of historical psychology. This is a two-year part-time position beginning in January 2022, preferably, and no later than June 2022; the stipend will be $30,000 per year. Besides regular meetings with the project PI, Joe Henrich (Harvard University), and Co-PI, Jonathan Schulz (George Mason University), the position will entail close collaboration with the Quantitative Criticism Lab, co-directed by Joseph Dexter (Harvard University) and Pramit Chaudhuri (University of Texas at Austin). The aim of the project is to develop computational methods for the study of diachronic changes in psychology based on current research in the social sciences and developments in computational text analysis for Latin and other premodern languages. The work forms part of a larger project, funded by the Templeton Foundation, to explore relationships between religion, kinship, and society. The position requires research competence in Latin, ancient psychology, and history of emotions. Desired but optional areas of experience include one or more of the following: Greek, digital humanities, history of ideas, lexicography. The successful applicant will join a cross-disciplinary, highly collaborative team of humanists, social scientists, and data scientists; as such, no prior experience with computation or statistical analysis is required. We welcome applications from current Ph.D. students in all relevant academic fields and at any institution who plan to graduate no earlier than 2024. Remote work may be possible, in which case occasional travel to in-person collaborative meetings will be required.
