The Department of Art at the University of Virginia seeks an Assistant Professor of Art and Archaeology of the Roman World for a three-year appointment as an Assistant Professor on the general faculty to join a dynamic interdisciplinary cohort of scholars dedicated to the study of the ancient world. This is a three-year, tenure-ineligible appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon available funding, satisfactory performance, and need for the position.

This position involves a 2/2 teaching load (.67 FTE and benefit eligible) at the undergraduate level and includes mentorship of independent study and research projects, service to the Art Department, and involvement with the faculty and students of the Interdisciplinary Archaeology Program. The successful applicant will be prepared to teach core offerings such as Roman Art and Archaeology and Introduction to Classical Archaeology as well as courses oriented to new perspectives on the art and material culture of the past, especially those that center questions of race, class, gender, and sexuality.

A PhD in the History of Art or other appropriate field is required for this position. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and the ability to mentor undergraduate students at all levels. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture in their teaching and mentorship. At least one year of college-level teaching experience, beyond a graduate assistantship, is preferred. Archaeological fieldwork experience and ongoing engagement with the field that informs the candidate’s teaching is also welcome.
