The Classics Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position as a Thomas F. Cooper Postdoctoral Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of two years beginning in the fall semester of 2023-24, with three (3) courses taught per academic year and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. The department is looking for an expert in ancient history with the ability to teach Greek and Latin at all levels. The position is supported by a generous donation from Oberlin alumnus Thomas F. Cooper.

The Department of Classics has four full-time faculty and teaches a wide range of courses in Classical Civilization, including Greek and Roman literature, ancient history, archaeology, and culture, as well as four years each of Latin and Greek. The post-doctoral fellow will teach three courses over the two semesters, including the History of Greece and the History of Rome. The fellow should be able to teach courses in Greek and/or Latin at all levels. The Department will seek to hire a candidate who brings expertise in an area of Classical culture, history, or literature that complements the current strengths of our department. We are looking for individuals who are excited about teaching these courses at a small liberal arts college, and are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.
Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree awarded no earlier than 2020 but in hand by 1 July 2023. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
