Position and Qualifications

The position is for a generalist to teach five or six courses, including courses in elementary to advanced Latin and/or Greek, ancient art, and an undergraduate classics course on a topic of choice. Two faculty members cover most of the ancient studies courses: three levels of ancient Greek and Latin, mythology, art history, history, literature, women’s studies, and theater. Majors can concentrate in Classical Philology or Ancient Studies, and minors in Greek or Latin are possible. At any given time, there are 12-15 majors and minors on campus, and 2-3 Classics majors graduate each year. Classes are small, ranging from about 25 in larger lecture courses to 5-6 in upper-level language classes and seminars. Students can choose to study abroad in Greece or Italy or participate in a travel-study program in the January short term.

Since 1975, the department has sponsored a Classics Symposium, an event focusing on a single theme of current interest in classical studies. Renowned scholars deliver public lectures and encourage dialogue about the ancient world.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by June 30, 2023. Applicants with expertise in gender and women’s studies and who can offer courses cross-listed with the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies and who have college teaching experience are preferred. Applications are sought from those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations and share Hollins’ commitment to preparing students for leadership opportunities in a broadly diverse, global society.
