The Department of Classics at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university invites applications for a three-year renewable term position at the rank of Lecturer. The department seeks a broadly trained philologist with an emphasis in either Greek or Latin prose. This is a full-time, three-year non-tenurable teaching appointment that may be renewed for additional terms contingent upon the availability of funds, persistent programmatic need, and superior teaching, service and professional activity. The initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal for terms of three years and then six years contingent on superior performance, persistent programmatic need, and availability of funds. Lecturers have responsibilities in teaching and instructional leadership (70%), professional activity (15%), and service (15%). The expected teaching load is 7 courses over three academic quarters (Fall, Winter, and Spring). The appointment start date is September 1, 2015. Salary range is $52,000-$57,800, depending on teaching experience. Benefits eligible.

Basic Qualifications: An outstanding record of teaching excellence in Greek and Latin is mandatory, and a PhD in hand by the beginning of the appointment is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities: Duties include but are not limited to:

1. Must be able to teach introductory sequences in Greek and Latin as well as upper-level languages, and a two-quarter Culture and Ideas sequence in the University’s Core Curriculum

2. Be able to contribute to Santa Clara’s Residential Learning Communities

3. Conduct all assigned class meetings and exams

4. Hold weekly office hours on campus

5. Assign and submit student grades to the Registrar by the designated deadline

6. Participate in curricular design and assessment meetings as appropriate to the candidate’s teaching areas as determined by the department chair

7. Administer numerical and narrative course evaluations as well as other evaluation instruments as directed by the chair or dean

8. Engage in professional activity that consists of scholarly or creative work, professional practice, or other active engagement in a discipline or field that enables the Lecturer to remain current in the area of expertise and vital as a teacher

9. Engage in appropriate department, College or University-level service

10. Fulfill other instructional, academic or service activities such as attending faculty meetings or department special events and serving as faculty advisor to designated students or groups, as assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
