The Department of Classics at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The department seeks a broadly trained scholar working in material culture, with an historical and/or archaeological emphasis. The appointment start date is September 1, 2015. Salary is commensurate with experience, fully benefits eligible, faculty housing program available.
Basic qualifications: An outstanding record of teaching excellence and evidence of success in a program of scholarly research are mandatory; and a PhD in hand and potential for acting as the chair of the department in the future (post-tenure) are strongly preferred.
Responsibilities: Candidates should be able to teach ancient history with an appreciation of material culture, and upper-level prose courses in both Greek and Latin. Some specialization in ancient political institutions, or links with an on-going excavation are desirable, but not mandatory. Courses will vary year to year. Applicants will be expected to teach a two-quarter Cultures and Ideas sequence in the University’s Core Curriculum and should be able to contribute to Santa Clara’s Residential Learning Communities. Full-time teaching is seven courses per academic year with one release for an active scholarly program, which results in two courses per quarter. The successful candidate will also have plans for a strong scholarly program that will yield published works and, when possible, include undergraduates. The successful candidate will also provide service to the department, college, university and discipline as appropriate to rank.
