The Classics Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of two years beginning fall semester of 2015-16 and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Fellow. The position is supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The successful candidate will teach courses in the general area of Classical Civilization and Languages. Teaching load will be two courses per year. Over the two-year period, the candidate will teach either a Greek or Roman History course; an upper-level language course; a course of their own design in the Classical Civilization sequence; and a fourth course to be determined in accordance with the candidate’s interests. The Department is particularly interested in candidates who can develop a new course in the area of ancient social history, broadly defined; it is desirable that the candidate be capable of teaching both Greek and Latin. Areas of expertise are open, including (but not limited to): race and ethnicity in the ancient world; slaves, women, and other marginalized groups; and the edges of the ancient world.

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree awarded no earlier than 2012 or in hand by 1 July 2015. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

The Department of Classics has four full-time faculty and teaches a wide range of course in Classical civilization, including Greek and Latin literature, ancient history, and ancient archaeology.
