Hiram College invites applications for a visiting full-time assistant professor in Classical Studies beginning August 2015. The College seeks a dynamic colleague to re-create a curriculum in Classical Studies after a decade lapse. Preferred candidates would have a Ph.D. in Classical Studies, but perhaps in other disciplines with appropriate expertise and experience. Candidates who are A.B.D. may be considered for appointment as visiting instructor. Hiram’s faculty sees classical studies as central to our mission as a liberal arts college and its reestablishment is broadly supported throughout the College. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty throughout the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences. The position must contribute to Hiram’s distinctive and robust first year writing program and the College’s core curriculum, and will also have the opportunity to offer interdisciplinary, or even study away courses. The ability to engage students in the study of classics in translation is essential to this position. Expertise and experience in teaching language courses in Latin is expected, though the opportunity to teach beyond the introductory level in language courses will depend upon demand. Ability to teach language courses in Greek would be desirable, though it is uncertain that Greek will be reestablished within the term of the appointment. This position is limited to a three year appointment, but with the hope that a subsequent position will be opened in the future, dependent on funding and established need. The successful candidate will be expected to teach six courses each year in Hiram's unique 12-week/3-week semester plan (two courses during each 12-week and one during the 3-week). There will be some departmental service work and expectations of regular participation in the life of the college. We ask applicants to speak directly in their application to their fit (with regard to experience, interests, and potential contributions) to the position as described. Please send letter of application, C.V., and a teaching portfolio which demonstrates commitment to and success in undergraduate teaching (including sample syllabi, peer and student evaluations, and a statement of teaching philosophy), a writing sample and letters of recommendation, electronically to HR@hiram.edu. Review of applications will begin January 15, 2015, and will continue until the position is filled. We hope to schedule video-interviews early in 2015 and bring finalists to campus soon thereafter.
