Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time, one-year leave replacement (5 courses) position as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics, to begin September 1, 2015. The department anticipates a continued vacancy, and the successful candidate may be considered for continuation into the 2016-17 academic year, contingent upon favorable review and the continuing needs of the College.

Minimum Required Qualifications: We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. We seek candidates with demonstrated teaching excellence and the ability to teach courses in Latin as well as courses in translation. A commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising is essential.

Preferred Qualifications: A willingness and ability to teach Classical Mythology or Greek and Roman art and archaeology courses are especially welcome. We are interested in applicants who will complement our commitment to students and faculty from diverse cultural groups, and who will diversify the expertise and experiences represented in the department.

Major/Essential Functions: Primary teaching responsibilities will include five courses, two in the fall semester and three in spring. Courses are likely to include beginning-level Latin and Vergil's Aeneid, although the successful applicant’s interests and expertise will be taken into account in finalizing course allocation.

The application materials must include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, transcripts (scanned copies acceptable), and three confidential letters of professional recommendation (sent directly from the reference or letter service). The letter of application should address the following: (i) teaching experience, including details of courses taught; (ii) other areas of teaching competence beyond what the applicant has already taught (for details of our courses, see https://gustavus.edu/general_catalog/current/classics#classics_major); and (iii) examples of teaching methods used in language classes.
