The Department of Classical Languages and Literatures at Smith College invites applications for a two-year, benefits eligible, non-tenure-track position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, to begin July 2016. We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring any of the following emerging methodologies and/or fields to our curriculum: material culture of Ancient Greece, public humanities, race and ethnicity in classical antiquity, and/or reception studies. Digital approaches in these or other areas of classical studies are also welcome. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required by the time of appointment.

The teaching load is five courses per year, and candidates must be prepared to teach Greek and/or Latin in the original languages, as well as courses in English translation. Promising candidates will be scholars whose experience, teaching or research will enhance the diversity and cultural competency of the Smith Community.

Located in Northampton, MA, Smith College is the largest women's college in the country and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research across the liberal arts. A faculty of outstanding scholars interact with students in small classes, as advisors, and through student-faculty research projects. Tenure-track faculty members teach two courses each semester, mentor and advise undergraduates, and enjoy a generous sabbatical policy. The Five College Consortium, comprised of Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, provides a rich intellectual and cultural life.
