Portions of the annual disbursement received by the Society for Classical Studies and the American Classical League from the Rudolph Masciantonio legacy gift fund will be used to advance the creation of a more inclusive environment in the field of Ancient Mediterranean Studies in K-12 education and offer assistance to teachers of K-12 students and those who are pursuing a career in K-12 education in areas relevant to our discipline (Latin, Ancient Greek, and Classics).
There are TWO types of Masciantonio grants:
- The Rudolph Masciantonio Latin Teacher Grant to Support DEI Initiatives
- The Rudolph Masciantonio Support Grant for Student Teachers of Latin
SCS membership is not required for application to either grant. The Latin Teacher Grant to Support DEI Initiatives is described below, with information about how to apply. For more information on the Support Grant for Student Teachers of Latin, please visit the Rudolph Masciantonio Support Grant for Student Teachers of Latin page.

The Rudolph Masciantonio Latin Teacher Grants to Support DEI Initiatives
The aim of this grant is to increase funding available to K-12 Latin teachers and their students, so that teachers can: a) provide richer experiences for students in schools where a lack of resources denies them opportunities for (e.g.) field trips, participation in JCL or other regional events, or sufficient educational resources within their classrooms; and b) provide the opportunity for more high school students from groups underrepresented in our field to develop their interests in the field that will encourage them to continue their studies at the college level.
These grants provide up to $1200 to teachers working at K-12 schools of any type (public or independent schools) to financially support class related activities. Preference will be given to teachers whose students are a) limited in their access to these opportunities due to a lack of financial resources at the school, b) are underrepresented in our field, and c) who come from marginalized backgrounds. Grants can fund the following, inter alia:
- Field trips
- JCL/NLE expenses
- Books or novellas for a class library
- Technology or other classroom resources
- Professional development connected to DEI initiatives.
Depending on the amounts of money sought by those applying, the number of applicants, and the committee’s approval of applications, grants may be offered to more than one applicant.
Application Deadlines: November 29, 2024
Applications may be submitted earlier than these deadlines as school budgets and event schedules become available, but grants will not be offered until a month after these deadlines.
The process for submitting applications will be different in 2024-2025 than in past years. To apply, please submit an application through our award, fellowship, and grant application system: apply.classicalstudies.org. The form will open for submissions two to three months before the deadline.
The teacher applying will be asked to provide the following information:
- Name of applying teacher and teacher’s school email address;
- Name of school, address of school, and link to school website;
- Name and email address of school principal or chief administrator;
- Grade-level(s), course(s) of study, and number of children served by the grant;
- Description of project being proposed for funding by the Masciantonio grant with specific information on the way this proposal addresses aspects of diversity, inclusivity, and equity within your program - please add to this a brief description of the demographics of your school and the nature of the challenges students face in access to educational resources.
- Amount requested and a description of the budget items that add up to the amount requested.
Applications will be considered by the Masciantonio Grant committee within the Education Division of the Society for Classical Studies. The committee consists of individuals selected by the President of the American Classical League and the Vice-President for Education of the Society for Classical Studies. If you have any questions, please contact the Executive Director of the Society for Classical Studies (xd@classicalstudies.org).
