Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Classics (Mediterranean or Near Eastern Culture beyond Greece or Rome)

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Department of Classics at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in an ancient Mediterranean or Near Eastern culture beyond Greece or Rome to begin in August 2024. As our department expands our curriculum and redesigns our major, we seek a new colleague who will join us in our work to contextualize ancient Greek and Roman cultures within the broader ancient Mediterranean, while equipping students with a robust theoretical toolkit for approaching the ancient world and modern challenges. Our new colleague will be prepared to teach courses on ancient peoples and cultures beyond Greeks and Romans as well as on a language of the ancient Mediterranean or Near East other than Greek or Latin, such as Akkadian, Ancient Egyptian, Aramaic, Classical Arabic, Hebrew, or Phoenician. Their teaching and research will be informed by one or more interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks, such as Critical Race and Ethnic Studies; Environmental Studies; or Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. Our new colleague will also contribute to one or more of three departmental priorities: collaborative student research; expansion of our curriculum; and/or public outreach. We will consider it a strength if candidates have the potential to teach courses on the reception of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. We welcome candidates with research agendas that could flourish within a liberal arts setting and that could complement and expand our current faculty’s work. We also welcome candidates with the potential to make active service contributions according to their interests within the department and at the College.

This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a full-salary one-semester research leave prior to tenure review, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. All full-time appointments offer competitive salaries and include full benefits, including travel support and reimbursement for relocation. Faculty at the College cultivate a richly diverse academic community, pursue innovative teaching, and create high-impact scholarship.
