The Classics Department at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a full-time continuing, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Renewable Term Lecturer. The department seeks a broadly-trained Classical philologist with expertise in one or more North African, Near Eastern, or Asian cultures. Scholars who work on cultural interactions or influence between non-Hellenic and Hellenic cultures or who adopt a comparative approach are especially encouraged to apply. The position duties are teaching/advising (70%), service (15%), and professional activity (15%). The expected teaching load is 7 undergraduate courses over three academic quarters (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Renewable Term Lecturers are appointed for a term of three years. Reappointment to subsequent terms of three years and then six years are available depending upon the availability of funds, persistent programmatic need, and superior teaching, service, and professional activity. Promotion to Senior lecturer is possible after 9 years of experience. The appointment start date is September 1, 2024. The ability to teach Ancient Greek and Latin at every undergraduate level is essential. Candidates should also be able to teach a two-quarter Cultures and Ideas sequence in the University’s Core Curriculum and be eager to design and teach new courses for other areas of the core. A record of teaching excellence is required. Applicants should have a terminal degree (Ph.D.) in Classics or a closely-related field, but applicants who are ABD will be considered provided that their degree will be in hand by September 1, 2024.

Salary: $72,748 - $80,715 based on years of university teaching experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Classics or a closely-related field, to be completed by September 1, 2024
  • Ability to teach Ancient Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels
  • Expertise in one or more ancient cultures other than Ancient Greek and Roman cultures
  • Ability to teach a range of core courses
