Assistant or Associate Professor in Classics and Ancient Science

The Department of Classics at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-stream Assistant or tenured Associate Professor position in Classics with an area of expertise in ancient science. The appointment will begin on September 1, 2024. The teaching load is four courses in a two-term academic year (two courses in the fall semester, two courses in the spring semester). A PhD in Classics or a closely related field (e.g., Ancient Philosophy/Science or Near Eastern Studies) is required at the time of appointment. We welcome applicants who approach the intellectual history of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome as part of a multicultural and interconnected Mediterranean region. In addition to contributing to the department’s undergraduate Classics curriculum (instruction in one or more ancient languages at all levels and courses in translation on ancient Mediterranean culture) the successful candidate is expected to participate in our interdisciplinary graduate program in Classics, Philosophy, and Ancient Science (CPAS) by teaching graduate seminars and directing doctoral research. The candidate is also expected to develop a research profile in one of the following areas:

  • the history of the sciences in Greece or Rome and/or the broader ancient Mediterranean;

  • cross-cultural knowledge transfer in the ancient world;

  • the development of scientific didactic literature in poetry and prose;

  • ancient mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and the natural sciences.

The department seeks applicants who have demonstrated both excellence and promise in research and teaching and who have a strong commitment to Classics as a meaningful field of study in the modern world that can engage and support students of all backgrounds in the twenty-first century. As a member of the Pitt Classics Department, the successful candidate will be expected to think and act creatively in integrating teaching, mentoring, and scholarship with promoting diversity and inclusion in the classroom and throughout the University community.
