The Department of Classics at New York University invites applications for a position at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-track), to begin September 1, 2024, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. This position is a part of a multi-departmental cluster hire in Comparative Antiquities that includes the Departments of Classics, Comparative Literature, Art History, Hebrew & Judaic Studies, and East Asian Studies; this cluster is an exciting new initiative, reflecting the growing awareness that the separation of ancient cultures into discrete disciplinary units is a substantial hindrance to our proper understanding of antiquity. For this position, we are seeking a scholar of Greek literature whose work sets it in the context of other ancient cultures, for example the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Nubia, South Asia, or China. We welcome applicants working in any field of Greek literature, but we are especially interested in people working in literature of the archaic period. All candidates should have the Ph.D. in hand by the time of taking up the position. The department has a strong commitment to excellence in both research and teaching, and we expect the successful candidate to be able to contribute on both fronts.

Pay Transparency Statement. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 - $135,000.
