Annual Meeting

Every winter, the Society for Classical Studies holds a joint meeting with the Archaeological Institute of America. In addition to the presentation of individual papers and panels, features of the annual meeting include the Placement Service, for institutions advertising positions and candidates seeking them; an exhibit hall for browsing and purchasing the latest books from a variety of publishers; roundtable discussion sessions; dramatic performances by the Committee on Ancient and Modern Performance; meetings and receptions of affiliated groups; and much more.

Hybrid Meeting Update, 07/07/21

AIA and SCS have been working on detailed plans for our 2022 joint Annual Meeting based on the results of our recent survey. Since 60% of respondents expressed a preference for a hybrid meeting, we are planning for our first ever hybrid conference in January 2022. This means speakers will be able to present in person in San Francisco or remotely in each session, and attendees will be able to attend sessions in the hotel or virtually. This is an ambitious undertaking and some elements of the conference cannot easily have a hybrid format; for example, social events will need to be either in person or virtual. However, we aim to make the meeting as hybrid as is feasible given logistics, costs, and staff capacity.  We anticipate a two-tier scale of registration rates, with virtual attendance costing less than in person attendance. There are many details still to be worked out, so please bear with us and we will update you later this Summer and in the Fall.

Members who made submissions to the SCS program committee this spring can expect to receive notification emails about the program committee’s decisions within the next few days.

Submissions

The SCS program submission system is now closed.

Before submitting, please read the guidelines for each type of submission. Note that this year the program committee is calling for lightning talk submissions on two topics, pedagogy and antiracism.

Submission Deadlines

  • Friday April 16 at 11.59pm EDT: Panel, committee panel, workshop, seminar, and roundtable proposals; reports on selection of abstracts for affiliated group and organizer-refereed panels in 2022; new charter applications and charter renewals for affiliated groups; organizer-refereed panel proposals for the 2023 meeting.
  • Friday April 23 at 11.59pm EDT: Individual abstracts and lightning talk abstracts.

Special Events

The 2022 Annual Meeting will feature the SCS Plenary Session, the CAMP Play, and the Presidential Panel organized by President Shelley P. Haley. The 2022 Panel, "Say Her Name: Reconstructing the Career and Lived Experience of Helen Maria Chesnutt" will feature as speakers President Shelley P. Haley, Kelly Dugan, Nicole Adiyenka Spigner, and Tracey Walters.

Meeting Planning

Please submit your abstracts and proposals for the 2022 Annual Meeting! As in 2021, we aim to accommodate all those presentations, panels, workshops, seminars, and roundtables that are accepted for the program, although we cannot be certain as yet what shape the meeting will take.

We are scheduled to hold the 2022 Annual Meeting in San Francisco at the Hilton Union Square but obviously the pandemic continues to provide unprecedented challenges. Currently, we are engaged in early-stage planning with our counterparts at AIA and at the Hilton San Francisco, and with audiovisual and technology vendors in order to investigate possibilities for a hybrid meeting. We are also monitoring the pandemic and vaccine rollout globally. We have received helpful feedback already from members on the 2021 Annual Meeting survey. Additionally, we plan to distribute a 2022 Pre-Annual Meeting Survey in late spring or early summer to elicit member feedback on the organization of the meeting and individual participation needs and preferences.

Once we are able to form a clearer idea of the most appropriate format for the 2022 Annual Meeting, taking into account public health concerns, accessibility and equity, existing contracts and measures necessitated by COVID-19, we will be sure to inform all members of developments and have an ongoing dialogue with presenters and attendees.
