The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: Departmental Member Spotlight

The Classics Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign offers BA, MA, and PhD programs in Greek, Latin, Classical Civilization, and Classical Philology, an MA in the Teaching of Latin, and an undergraduate minor in Modern Greek Studies. All of our graduate students are fully funded, and additional fellowships are available to support research-related travel.

2024 Charles J. Goodwin Awards of Merit

The Charles J. Goodwin Awards of Merit, three prizes given annually, are named in honor of a long-time member and generous benefactor of the Society for Classical Studies. They are the only honors for scholarly books given by the Society. The awards are presented at the Annual Meeting for an outstanding contribution to classical scholarship published by a member of the Society during the three years before the current calendar year, i.e., in this case, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

NEH Grant Awardee: Resituating the Humanities in Place-Based Learning

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded a grant to fund a three-year project at Monmouth College, “Resituating the Humanities in Place-Based Learning.” Congratulations to Robert Holschuh Simmons (Classics), David Wright (English), Anne Mamary (Philosophy), and Valerie Deisinger (History)! This humanities initiative will create a digital repository based on student projects that center issues of displacement and local history in West Central Illinois.

Changes to SCS Dues Rates

We hope to see many of you again in Philadelphia next year (2-5 January 2025), and urge you to renew your membership now if you haven’t done so already, as dues rates are scheduled to rise on February 1st. The SCS Board of Directors voted unanimously to change the dues rates at their meeting in Chicago earlier this month. In awareness of the economic challenges our lower-salaried members face, the new dues structure does not raise rates at all, or only by very little, for these members.

The 2024 David D. and Rosemary H. Coffin Fellowship

In 2024 the Society for Classical Studies (SCS) will again award the David D. and Rosemary H. Coffin Fellowship for study and travel in classical lands. The Fellowship was established in 2004 by the friends and students of David and Rosemary Coffin to honor the skill, devotion, learning, and kindness with which they educated students at Phillips Exeter Academy for more than thirty years.
